Carpet is still the cosiest, quietest floor you can put in a home, but with so many fibres, pile styles and price points, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. The good news is that it comes down to a handful of decisions: the fibre, the pile style, the underlay and how each room is actually used. Here is how we help Adelaide customers narrow it down.
1. Start with the fibre
The fibre decides how your carpet feels, wears and cleans, and matters more than colour for how it will look in five years.
- Wool, naturally soft, resilient and a little luxurious. It holds its texture well and ages beautifully. New wool carpet often sheds loose fibres for the first few months, which is normal and settles with regular vacuuming.
- Wool blend, wool mixed with a synthetic fibre. You get much of the feel of wool with some extra toughness, and usually a friendlier price.
- Solution-dyed nylon, tough, fade-resistant and brilliant with stains; our go-to for busy family homes. The colour is added while the fibre is being made, so it runs right through each strand rather than sitting on the surface.
- Polyester, soft underfoot, rich in colour and great value, with good stain resistance. It is less springy than nylon, so it suits bedrooms better than hallways.
- Triexta, a member of the polyester family with a soft feel, good stain resistance and more bounce-back than standard polyester.
- Polypropylene, budget-friendly, colourfast and hard-wearing for lower-traffic rooms, rumpus rooms and rentals. It can crush over time in busy walkways.

2. Pick a pile style
The pile is how the yarn is finished on the surface. It changes the look, the feel and how well the carpet hides marks.
- Plush, a smooth, velvety cut pile with a formal look. It feels lovely but shows footprints and vacuum lines, so it suits bedrooms and lounges more than hallways.
- Twist, cut pile with tightly twisted yarns. It has a relaxed, hard-wearing finish that hides footprints, which is why it is the most popular choice for family homes.
- Loop pile, uncut loops for a textured, contemporary feel. It is durable and shows few marks, but loops can be snagged by cat and dog claws.
- Cut & loop, a mix of cut and looped yarns that creates a subtle pattern and helps disguise everyday soiling.
Two more terms you will hear: pile height (how long the yarn is) and density (how tightly the yarn is packed). For busy rooms, density counts for more than height. Bend a sample back; if the backing shows easily, it is less dense.
3. Don't forget the underlay
Good underlay makes carpet feel better underfoot, last longer and insulate against noise and cold, a small spend that makes a big difference. Busier rooms and stairs need a firmer, denser underlay, while bedrooms can take something softer. Some carpet warranties also call for a minimum underlay quality, so we always match the two. 4. Match it to the room
- Bedrooms can take a softer carpet: wool, polyester or a plush pile. Comfort comes first here.
- Living and family rooms need a balance of comfort and durability. A twist pile in wool blend or solution-dyed nylon is a reliable choice.
- Hallways take the most foot traffic. Go for a dense twist or tight loop, and avoid very pale colours that show a worn track down the middle.
- Rumpus and spare rooms are a good place to save with polypropylene or polyester.
Pets and kids
Solution-dyed nylon and triexta are the easiest fibres to live with when spills and accidents are part of daily life. A twist pile hides more than a plush one. If you have cats or dogs that like to scratch, skip loop pile so claws don't catch and pull the loops. Mid-tone, flecked colours are far more forgiving than solid light or dark shades.
Stairs
Stairs wear faster than any other part of the house because every step lands on the same edge. Choose a dense, shorter pile, with a twist or tight loop, and a firm underlay so the carpet doesn't move over the nosing. Long, soft plush can look tired on stair edges quickly. Stairs are fitted and priced per step, so let us know how many you have when you book.
Adelaide climate notes
- Sun and fading. Strong afternoon sun through north and west-facing windows can fade carpet over time. Solution-dyed fibres hold their colour best, and good window coverings help too (see our Blinds Buying Guide).
- Cool winters. Carpet and a quality underlay add real warmth underfoot on cold mornings, especially over concrete slabs.
- Dust and grit. Hot, dry summers bring fine dust and sand indoors. Grit wears down fibres, so mats at the doors and regular vacuuming make a big difference.
Caring for your carpet
- Vacuum at least weekly, and more often in hallways and living areas.
- Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth. Don't rub, as it spreads the stain and roughs up the pile.
- Have the carpet professionally cleaned from time to time, following the manufacturer's care guide.
- Use furniture cups under heavy pieces and move them occasionally to avoid deep dents.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Judging a sample under showroom lights. Always look at it in your own room, in daylight and at night.
- Putting a soft, low-density carpet in a hallway or on stairs.
- Laying new carpet over old, worn underlay.
- Choosing loop pile when the household includes scratching pets.
What to expect at your measure & quote
